Product Overview

What is Graphite-PTFE Hybrid Packing?

Graphite PTFE hybrid packing is a braided gland packing that integrates expanded graphite lubrication with PTFE matrix or PTFE-coated yarns. The hybrid design delivers a balance of excellent chemical compatibility (from PTFE), reduced friction and shaft protection (from graphite), plus improved high-temperature performance compared with PTFE-only packings. It is engineered for demanding pump, valve and rotating shaft applications where both chemical resistance and thermal stability are important.

Typical Constructions

  • PTFE yarn core with graphite impregnation — excellent chemical resistance + lubricity.

  • Graphite-coated PTFE braid — improved temperature endurance and lubrication film.

  • Multi-strand PTFE/graphite blend yarn braid — balanced mechanical strength and low friction.

  • Reinforced core options (aramid/nylon core + PTFE/graphite wrap) — for higher pressure/abrasion environments.

Key Features & Buyer Benefits

  • Low friction & reduced shaft wear — graphite film reduces running friction; PTFE prevents chemical attack.

  • Extended temperature window — typical operating up to ~300°C (grade dependent) with short excursions higher in non-oxidizing atmospheres.

  • Broad chemical compatibility — strong resistance to hydrocarbons, solvents and many acids/alkalis (check datasheet for oxidizers).

  • Low leakage & tight sealing — suitable for vacuum, high pressure and steam applications when installed correctly.

  • Available forms — pre-formed valve rings, full spools (cut-to-length), pump kits and OEM packaging.

  • Electrical behavior — depending on graphite loading, offers partial conductivity for static dissipation where required.

Graphite PTFE Hybrid PackingApplications

  • Centrifugal, rotary and gear pumps handling hot oil, steam, hydrocarbons and chemicals.

  • Gate, globe, ball and check valve stems (pre-formed ring sets).

  • Thermal fluid circulation pumps and hot oil systems.

  • Refinery, petrochemical and chemical processing plants.

  • High-temperature process equipment, mixers and agitators.

  • Vacuum and low-outgassing applications (special low-ash grades).

Technical Specifications (typical / conservative values)

Values vary by formulation. Always request the material datasheet for the specific grade you plan to buy.

  • Base materials: PTFE matrix + expanded natural graphite / graphite impregnation; optional reinforcement (aramid/nylon).

  • Construction: Square braid (8-strand or 12-strand) or multi-ply braid.

  • Recommended continuous temperature range: −200°C to +260°C for PTFE-dominant grades; −200°C to ~300°C for graphite-enhanced grades (some grades tolerate short excursions to ~350°C in non-oxidizing atmospheres).

  • Maximum recommended pressure: up to 15 MPa (150 bar) depending on gland design and reinforcement.

  • Maximum shaft speed: up to 15 m/s (application dependent).

  • pH compatibility: approx. 0–14 for many hybrid grades; avoid concentrated oxidizers without testing.

  • Electrical conductivity: low to moderate (depends on % graphite).

  • Standard spool lengths: 5 m, 10 m, 20 m (custom lengths available).

  • Pre-formed valve ring sets: Standard 3-ring sets by stem diameter.

  • Testing & certification: ISO 9001 production; MSDS, batch test reports and leakage/run test data available on request.

Common Sizes (industry standard / real-world)

Square cross-section sizes (metric / imperial):

  • 3.0 mm (≈1/8″)

  • 4.0 mm (≈5/32″)

  • 5.0 mm (≈3/16″)

  • 6.0 mm (≈1/4″)

  • 8.0 mm (≈5/16″)

  • 10.0 mm (≈3/8″)

  • 12.0 mm (≈1/2″)

Valve pre-formed ring set examples (typical):

  • 1/4″ stem → 3 rings × 3.0 mm

  • 1/2″ stem → 3 rings × 6.0 mm

  • 3/4″ stem → 3 rings × 8.0 mm

  • 1″ stem → 3 rings × 10.0 mm

Advantages — Why Choose Graphite-PTFE Hybrid Packing

  1. Balanced performance: Combines PTFE chemical resistance with graphite’s lubrication and heat tolerance.

  2. Lower lifecycle cost: Longer runtime and reduced shaft replacement vs poorer performing packings.

  3. Versatile: Works in steam, hot oils, hydrocarbons and many chemical services.

  4. Low friction: Reduces operating temperature and energy loss.

  5. Easy retrofit: Direct replacement for PTFE or graphite packings in many pumps/valves.

  6. Customizable: Impregnation level, core material and spool format tailored to job specs.

Comparison: Graphite-PTFE Hybrid vs Other Packings

Property / Material Graphite-PTFE Hybrid Pure PTFE Packing Pure Graphite Packing Aramid (Kevlar®) Packing
Temperature capability High (~260–300°C) Moderate (~260°C) Very high (up to ~550°C, non-oxidizing) Moderate (~250°C)
Chemical resistance Excellent Excellent Good (watch oxidizers) Good (hydrocarbons)
Shaft wear Low Very low Low Low–medium
Abrasion resistance Medium Low Medium High
Leakage control Very good Good Very good Good
Conductivity Low–moderate Non-conductive Conductive Non-conductive
Best for Mixed chemical + high temp duties Highly corrosive chemistries Extreme temp / steam Abrasion / high mechanical stress

Selection tip: Choose Graphite-PTFE Hybrid when you need both chemical compatibility (PTFE) and high-temp/low-friction lubrication (graphite). For ultra-high temp in inert atmospheres choose pure graphite; for extreme chemical corrosives choose PTFE-dominant grades.

Installation & Best Practices

  • Inspect shaft/stem for scoring; recommended surface finish Ra ≤ 0.8 µm.

  • Install as full sets (do not mix old/new or different materials).

  • Initial gland compression: snug but not over-tight — run and then re-tighten progressively to control leakage.

  • For steam/hot oil: allow controlled run-in leakage and re-adjust after 1–2 hours of operation.

  • Use lantern rings or flush ports where necessary for cooling and contamination removal.

  • For vacuum service, request low-ash/low-outgassing grade.
