💡 Mica Shield Protection

For steam service above 35 bar and for media with high pH value, transparent gauge glass must be protected by a mica shield on the side facing the medium chamber. Mica shields significantly extend the service life of sight glasses in high-pressure and high-temperature steam applications. They are mandatory where steam pressure exceeds 40 bar and temperature exceeds 200°C.

Reflex gauge glass has prismatic grooves that create a high-contrast level indication (dark for liquid, bright for vapor), while transparent gauge glass is clear and smooth on both sides, allowing a direct, unobstructed view of the fluid. Transparent glass is preferred for viscous, interface, or coloured liquids where fluid properties need to be visually inspected. It is also the only type that can be protected with mica shields for high-pressure steam service above 35 bar.
Why is mica shield protection mandatory for transparent gauge glass? +
Mica shields are mandatory where saturated steam pressure exceeds 40 bar and temperature exceeds 200°C. They protect the glass from the corrosive action of boiler water and condensate, which causes silica to be leached from the glass surface. Mica shields significantly extend the service life of transparent gauge glass and are required for steam service above 35 bar.
What are the different types of transparent gauge glass available? +

How should transparent gauge glass be installed and maintained? +
Always use new gaskets when installing gauge glass. The glass must be centered in the fitting to avoid glass-metal contact. Tighten cover bolts gradually in a cross-pattern sequence, starting from the middle. Never reuse a gauge glass that has been exposed to process conditions. Inspect regularly for chips, cracks, or clouding, and replace immediately if any damage is found. For steam service with mica shields, inspect the mica for damage during each maintenance cycle.
