What is the difference between Type A and Type B reflex gauge glass? +
Type A has a width of 30mm, while Type B has a width of 34mm. Both are 17mm thick. Type A is the standard width for most general-purpose level gauges, while Type B offers a wider viewing area and is often preferred for larger gauge assemblies or where greater visibility is required. Type H is also available with 34mm width and 22mm thickness for higher pressure applications.
Why is reflex gauge glass not recommended for steam applications above 35 bar? +
Reflex gauge glass cannot be protected with a mica shield, which is commonly used on transparent gauge glass to protect it from steam attack at higher pressures. For saturated steam above 35 bar, transparent gauge glass with mica protection is recommended instead. Reflex glass is ideal for steam service up to 35 bar, and for non-steam applications it can handle pressures up to 400 bar and temperatures up to 400°C.
How does reflex gauge glass indicate the liquid level? +
Reflex gauge glass has precision-molded 90° prismatic grooves on the process side. When light enters through the glass, the liquid-filled portion absorbs the light and appears black, while the vapor or gas space reflects the light and appears silvery-white. This creates a sharp, high-contrast level indication that is easy to read. The glass itself requires no external illumination in adequately lit areas.
What is the maximum operating pressure and temperature? +
For saturated steam applications, reflex gauge glass is rated up to 35 bar. For non-steam applications, it can be used at pressures up to 400 bar and temperatures up to 400°C. At lower pressures, temperatures up to 430°C may be achievable. Specific ratings depend on the glass dimensions, gasket material, and gauge assembly design.

Yes. While standard sizes 0–9 cover lengths from 95mm to 400mm, we can manufacture custom lengths, widths, and thicknesses to match your existing gauge assembly. How should reflex gauge glass be installed and maintained? +
Always use new gaskets when installing gauge glass. The glass must be centered in the fitting to avoid glass-metal contact. Tighten cover bolts gradually in a cross-pattern sequence, starting from the middle. Never reuse a gauge glass that has been exposed to process conditions. Inspect regularly for chips, cracks, or clouding, and replace immediately if any damage is found.
