Product Overview

What is Graphite-Impregnated Packing?

Graphite impregnated packing is braided gland packing made from high-strength base yarns (aramid, PTFE, carbon, or mineral fibers) that are saturated or coated with natural/expanded graphite. The graphite impregnation delivers exceptional high-temperature performance, improved lubrication, low friction and enhanced chemical resistance. Commonly used in rotating and reciprocating shafts — pumps, valves, mixers and turbines.

Typical Constructions

  • Pure graphite yarn braid — excellent temperature capability, used where high temp and low friction are required.

  • Synthetic yarn + graphite impregnation (e.g., polyamide/aramid core with graphite matrix) — improved strength + graphite lubrication.

  • PTFE-core with graphite outer — chemical compatibility of PTFE with lubrication from graphite.

  • Graphite-resin hybrid — for abrasive or high-pressure duties where structural integrity is essential.

Key Features & Buyer Benefits

  • High temperature capability (sustained service in steam and high-heat processes).

  • Excellent lubrication and low running friction — reduces shaft/stem wear.

  • Good chemical resistance to hydrocarbons, most acids (consult datasheet for oxidizers).

  • Low leakage rates when installed correctly; suitable for vacuum and high-pressure duties.

  • Available as pre-formed rings, full spools (cut to length) and pump packing kits.

  • Easy retrofit replacement for older graphite or braided asbestos alternatives.

  • Export-ready packaging and customizable spool/ring options for OEMs and distributors.

Applications

  • Steam service in boilers and steam turbines.

  • Chemical & petrochemical pumps handling hydrocarbons.

  • Refinery and oil & gas rotating equipment.

  • High-temperature valves (gate, globe, check, ball) — pre-formed ring sets.

  • Hot oil and thermal fluid circulation pumps.

  • Heat exchangers, agitators, and industrial mixers.

  • Vacuum pumps and cryogenic variants (special low-ash graphite grades available).

Technical Specifications (typical / conservative ranges)

Important: Values vary by grade and impregnation level. Always request the material datasheet for exact performance and compatibility.

  • Base material options: Expanded natural graphite, graphite-impregnated PTFE, graphite-impregnated aramid, carbon fiber with graphite.

  • Construction: Square braid (8- or 12-strand) or multi-plait braid.

  • Temperature range: −200°C to +450°C (typical). Some pure graphite constructions tolerate brief excursions up to 550°C in non-oxidizing atmosphere.

  • Maximum recommended pressure: up to 20 MPa (200 bar) depending on gland design and application (consult application engineer).

  • Max shaft speed: up to 15 m/s (application dependent).

  • pH compatibility: broad (approx. pH 0–14 for many graphite-PTFE hybrids); unstable with strong oxidizers at elevated temperature—avoid concentrated nitric/perchloric acids without testing.

  • Electrical conductivity: graphite formulations are conductive — suitable for static dissipation.

  • Standard spool lengths: 5 m, 10 m, 20 m (custom lengths available).

  • Pre-formed valve sets: standard 3-ring kits matched by stem diameter.

  • Certs & testing: ISO 9001, batch material certificates, density/impregnation reports; leakage & run tests available on request.

Graphite Impregnated PackingCommon Sizes (realistic & industry-standard)

Square cross-section sizes (metric / imperial):

  • 3.0 mm (1/8″)

  • 4.0 mm (5/32″)

  • 5.0 mm (3/16″)

  • 6.0 mm (1/4″)

  • 8.0 mm (5/16″)

  • 10.0 mm (3/8″)

  • 12.0 mm (1/2″)

Valve pre-formed ring set examples (typical):

  • 1/4″ stem → 3 rings × 3.0 mm

  • 1/2″ stem → 3 rings × 6.0 mm

  • 3/4″ stem → 3 rings × 8.0 mm

  • 1″ stem → 3 rings × 10.0 mm

Advantages (why choose graphite impregnated packing)

  1. High-temperature resilience — maintains sealing and lubrication at elevated temperatures.

  2. Low friction & shaft protection — graphite film reduces wear on polished shafts and stems.

  3. Broad chemical compatibility — suitable for many hydrocarbons and organic solvents.

  4. Electrical conductivity — disperses static charge in pump/rotating systems.

  5. Flexible forms — pre-formed rings for valves or spools for pumps enabling fast installation.

  6. Longer runtime / reduced maintenance — lower downtime and lower total cost of ownership (TCO).

Installation & Best Practices

  • Inspect shaft/stem finish: recommended Ra ≤ 0.8 μm; no heavy scoring.

  • Use correct gland follower and even compression; tighten progressively while running to set.

  • For high temp/steam: allow controlled initial leakage during run-in, then re-tighten as packing seats.

  • Replace as full set; avoid mixing old and new rings or different materials.

  • For vacuum services, use graphite-PTFE hybrid for lower outgassing.

  • Provide gland cooling/flush for high pressure or slurry applications.

FAQ

Q: What is your MOQ for graphite impregnated packing?

A: Typical MOQ is 10–100 kg per SKU for standard grades. We accept smaller trial/sample orders—please contact sales with desired size/grade.

Q: How long does delivery take?

A: Stock items: 3–7 business days. Custom/impregnated pre-formed kits: 7–21 business days depending on volume and tooling.

Q: What shipping options are available?

A: We ship EXW/FOB/CIF/DDP. For samples we use courier (DHL/UPS/TNT). For bulk orders we usually ship by sea (FCL/LCL) or air if urgent.

Q: Can you supply pre-formed valve rings and pump packing kits?

A: Yes. We supply pre-formed valve ring sets, pump packing kits and OEM-labelled spools. Custom part numbering and packaging available.

Q: Can you customize impregnation, size and packaging?

A: Yes — graphite loading, base yarn, spool length, pre-form profiles and OEM packaging are customizable. Please provide application details (shaft diameter, temp, media) for best recommendation.

Q: Is graphite impregnation safe for oxidizing acids and steam?

A: Graphite excels in steam and many hydrocarbons. However, in strong oxidizing environments (e.g., fuming nitric acid, perchloric acid) at elevated temperature, graphite can oxidize — consult our application engineer for tested grade recommendations.
